day 279: Paradise Cove

For my job I would drive out to Malibu twice a week. I'm familiar with many restaurants along the PCH, so I was surprised to hear that I had never been to Paradise Cove Cafe. It's nestled in the Paradise Cove trailer park right on the beach just before Point Dume and Zuma Beach. This cafe is not pretentious, not touristy and not over priced. The food was delicious. We shared two appetizers and each had a drink. This was more than enough food for the three of us. The location felt like Mexico, because literally the tables and chairs are in the sand. It was a nice getaway from Los Angeles. Malibu is definitely a mental break from the craziness of LA.

Today I spent the afternoon with Fish and Amery. Fish and I met in Architecture 101 in undergrad.  We had to introduce each other to the class, and ever since we've been friends. We've live in the same city for about the same amount of time. There was one year when I lived in Santa Fe and she lived in Los Angeles. This next phase of our lives will be interesting. I know that she's a friend for life, but it will be strange not to have her a few blocks away.

day 269: another delicious evening

My usual desolate inbox was graced with the following message a few days ago, "It's booked! Yay!" It was in reference to a Wednesday night reservation at Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali's Mozza Pizzeria in Hollywood. This locale is the hip and delectable restaurant-of-the-moment. Reservations are scarce. It was a bustling scene filled with a varied group of young patrons. With the high ceilings and dim lighting, conversations resonated in the space. Tables were composed to accommodate large parties and intimate couples. Our seat was along the bench at the rear of the dining room, but welcomed the observation of the whole. Although our table was 6 inches from neighbors, it was intimate.

The dinner was another gift of deliciousness from my friend, neighbor, fellow Pisces, Nate, and his girlfriend, Giulia. Nate is a researcher and fine food lover. He will travel to Bell or Arcadia, CA, in search of the perfect Mexican restaurant or Chinese dumpling. So when he recommends a restaurant, be rest assured that you're in for a savory meal.

Mozza did not disappoint. Antpasti included Arancini alla bolognese and Meatballs al forno, compliments of the house. We paired it with a Furore Wine, a full-body white wine. Unfortunately the signature pizza, Squash blossoms, tomato & burrata, was unavailable which meant the antipasti dish, Fried squash blossoms with ricotta, was also not to be devoured. We were a little forlorn, but it encourages another visit. The menu is one to be relished. With words like panna, taleggio, guanciale, bagna cauda, it stimulates your taste buds. I would have been lost, if not, for Giulia. She's fluent in Italian and was able to translate for us.

We chose three pizzas:
-Fennel sausage, panna, red onion & scallions : sweet and a little spicy
-Tomato, mozzarella, sausage, salami, bacon & guanciale : the meat lovers, the right proportions of meat for perfect bite. All three of these meats were discernable in their taste.
-Prosciutto di Parma, rucola, tomato & mozzarella: my choice, I cannot express my love for prosciutto and arugula. The saltiness of the cured meat with the bitterness of the arugula is a lovely pairing. As soon as I read it, I knew it was the dish I would order.

The combination of toppings is amazing, but I have yet to mention the crust. The dough is sweet and bitter. Its the perfect combination of chewy and crispy. The crusts are a little blackened around the edges from the oven. Pizzas are cut into four slices allowing a fold to capture all of the ingredients into a bite.  Mozza is good. Mind-bogglingly good.

Intriguing conversation is par for the course with Nate and Giulia. I'm so fortunate to have met Nate and to have been introduced to Giulia. It was lovely evening capped with a mystical fog that had rolled in. Lovely, lovely, lovely.

day 244: Americana

I went to meet Mark and his family at the Grove. Mark had to run some errands. We then went to Americana at Brand. We walked around and the kids enjoyed the fountains choreographed to music. They're my muses.

day 230: Lobo Howl

I met another alum from UNM this afternoon, we went to Algabar where she bought a tea cup and then we enjoyed some yogurt from Yogurtland. It was so nice to meet up with another Lobo. Love Yogurtland, so cheap and delcious!

day 190: My life according to Massive Attack

The picture above has nothing to do with this post, other than, I got lost in Echo Park today trying to get back to Mt. Washington. That's typical me though, I will try something new, but never prepare for it. I was trying to avoid the freeways during rush hour.

day 187: ZAP! POW! BAM!

It was another fun-filled day. Henry and I drove across Mullholland Drive to the Skirball Museum for the ZAP! POW! BAM! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938–1950. I highly recommend this exhibit, if you are interested in comics or illustration. It's a beautiful collection of work from Jerry Siegel and Canadian-born artist Joe Shuster, Bob Kane, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, and many other comic legends.

We had lunch at Lamonica's in Westwood coupled with a milkshake from Fatburger. In an effort to kill a few hours and a few calories, we headed to Beverly Hills to see the Prada store and Greystone Mansion. After strolling around Beverly Hills, we spent an hour in traffic to see Cut Chemist DJ a beautiful evening at the Getty Museum.

day 185: Moiré pattern

The Louis Vuitton store in Century City has an interesting Moiré pattern on their display windows. It's two panes of glass set about 6" apart with a checkerboard pattern on each of the panes. I noticed people walking by, stopping, reversing and then continuing on with their walk.

day 183: Sencha Green Tea

Over two years ago, I gave up coffee. What started as a lenten sacrifice, became a lifestyle choice. As I research the health benefits of drinking tea (tons of antioxidants), I strive to make it a part of my daily ritual. Now, I have at least one cup of tea a day. As for coffee, I've had 1/2 a cup since my fasting, and it made my heart race and my hands shake. I decided then and there: I was done with drinking coffee.

I started out like many of you: I drank Celestial Seasonings herbal teas. As I delve deeper into tea culture, I've found an entire world of tea apart from herbal tea. If you would like more information about tea, visit these pages:

On Tuesday, I went to a Japanese sencha green tea tasting at Lupicia in Century City. There are three main types of green tea produced in Japan: sencha which is unshaded, gyokuro which is shaded, and matcha which is shaded and then powdered. A few things you should know about green tea are: temperature & steep time are very important. A bitter tea can be rendered if you don't prepare it correctly. Sencha is bright in color with a clean finish and a taste somewhat reminiscent of seaweed.

We started out with an Kawane Yuuki 2009, which is an organic tea, it was very light both in color and in taste. We then moved on to Miyazaki Sakimidori 2009, it was crisp and smooth. (I thought it was great for the price and the taste) The third tea was Uji Yabukita 2009, Uji is a region known for the tea. Charles, our tea master/brewer, told us Uji to tea is the same as Bordeaux to wine. The fourth steep was Omaezaki Yabukita 2009, I didn't take any notes on it. I guess that speaks for itself. The Chiran Yutakamirdori 2009, it's was also a light-flavored sencha out of the Chiran district in Japan. The last tea was a Yame Hoshino Himemidori 2009, out of the Yame tea district in Japan. Yame, Fukuoka is notable after Uji, Kyoto. It was the most expensive and full-bodied tea. I would highly recommend this tea if it's within your budget.

Now I'm still learning about tea. I hope that the information presented here is some what accurate.

day 179: stressed

This month has been so stressful. I didn't take a pic this day, so I had to pull one from another day. This was taken up on Sunset Blvd. It's the facade of a building and each of the posts has a light. It should be cool once the building is complete.

UPDATE 07.20.2009
Curbed LA has a post with more info on this building: West Hollywood's New Flare Just Pretty, Not Selling Anything

day 173: #stripcrawl

On twitter, I found out there was a Sunset Strip pubcrawl. (#stripcrawl) It included The Andaz Hotel, The Comedy Store, The Viper Room, The Roxy. For the first part of it my roommate joined me, and for the second half, Chadonna joined. At each location, they handed out buttons and that was the access into the club/bar where drink specials awaited. It was very successful, in part because I've never been to the Viper Room or the Roxy and, because I won Coldplay tickets! I can't wait. The concert is in a week.

day 158: UCLA Hannah Carter Japanese Garden

A friend cancelled their trip, and offered Fish and I their spot to visit the garden a couple of weeks ago, but we couldn't coordinate our schedules. At that time, I made reservations and they were for today. The UCLA Hannah Carter Japanese Garden is beautiful and peaceful. It was a definite time to getaway from the chaotic city life. Upon our arrival, we were in typical Prue and Fish style- 15 min late, the gentleman who greeted us said, "you can leave it all behind." wow.

The website doesn't give a location, you will receive it upon your confirmation. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 10:00am - 3:00pm by reservation only. Reservations are 50 mins.

day 152: Father's Office

A couple days/weeks ago, I went to Father's Office in Santa Monica with my friend, Heath. This week I checked out the Culver City location with Kara and Brian. I haven't seen them since (yikes, has it been since The Edison?) well, a long time.

The location is nice, but the bathroom is confusing. They have one of those poured-in-place concrete sinks (I won't disclose the name, because he's a terrible business man) that is shared by both the male and female bathrooms. It sickens me to think of the door knobs on each of the passage ways. Yuck! BUT when I walked up, there were about three men at the sink and it looked like a urinal. I froze and declared, "I'm sorry." while trying to turn around a man said, "no, no the women's bathroom is right past there," as he pointed me past the concrete sink...

It was a great night filled with great food, drinks and obviously GREAT FRIENDS! :)

day 141: Runyon Canyon

I've been discovering new trails in the Hollywood Hills, and I have found three other trails than the three most popular in Runyon Canyon. Since the pool was closed for unscheduled maintenance, I decided to hike all five that I knew of. The reason why Runyon is so popular is the location and the workout that you get from hiking. They're small trails, but burn your thighs. The weather has been perfect in LA for getting outdoors, it's not too hot. It's time to jump on a trail and get outside. :)

day 134: E3 @ LA Live

Fish and I went to the Digital LA party at the Conga Room in LA Live for the E3 conference. LA Live fits McLuhan's media is the message or media as a distraction. Wholey, flashing screens, colored lights, and digital stimulation at every turn, Batman.

We sipped on "Mario" margaritas and enjoyed the nice view of the courtyard at LA Live. After leaving the Conga Room, we strolled over to the Yard House where Henry joined us to discover that they have an a-mazing late night Happy Hour from 10-midnight. I definitely recommend the Yard House. The Conga Room was interesting: great views and a cool ceiling, but unless someone throws a party, I don't think I would go back. It was a fun night topped off with dancing on these sensored lights. It was, oh SO very reminiscent of Tom Hanks' Big and Michael Jackson's Billy Jean. Although we couldn't play chopsticks or heart and soul on it, next time we'll try Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I'm a nerd.

day 130: celebration

With a commanding win over the Denver Nuggets, the Lakers solidified their spot in the 2009 NBA Finals. As a celebration, we ordered a pizza from Vitello's Express in Studio City, and enjoyed two pieces of Cake (Red Velvet and Coconut). We never finished the two pieces of cake, but we gave it a good effort. Don't worry, there were four of us trying to tackle this feat and we failed. FYI Sweetharts recently opened up, it's a yogurt spot right behind Vitello's Express. They are having a grand opening on Saturday and will serve free yogurt from 2-5pm.

GO LAKERS!!

day 128: if that, then this

I hiked in Wilacre Park with Ritch this morning, but then decided to hike Fryman Canyon afterward. Last week I didn't complete the entire Betty B. Dearing trail, so I thought I would do it today. I got a little lost, but if that wouldn't have happened, then I wouldn't have found this beautiful bed of flowers. Luckily the trail is mostly shaded and crosses some small streams, so it was bearable. Being out on a trail for 4 hours is tiring. Luckily I tried the 5 hour energy drink, and, I think, it kept me going. I inhaled my PB& J and protein shake when I got back to the car.

That's me in the reflection of the stream. :)

day 124: Mt Hollywood

I woke up and decided to hike Mt. Hollywood. I've become obsessed with the Hollywood Hills, lately, but it's so beautiful and so close. You can hike near the Hollywood sign, but you can't get closer than the picture I took. This was not a strenuous hike, it was actually quite easy. The hardest part was the beginning, because it's a steady up hill for about 2 miles. Then it flattens out for a bit and then a short steep uphill to the top. I kinda wandered around with my map in hand and found another trail that I would like to try, I believe it goes up to Cahuenga Peak.
When I set my mind to do something, there is little that will dissuade me from accomplishing it, call it determination or insanity. Today, I wanted to tackle the Beachwood Canyon staircases (and I was crazy enough to add in the 5 mile run around the Hollywood Reservoir). The staircases are intense. There are six of them, and even if I was supposed to only descend them, I would turn right back around, ascend them and then descend again. The last stair case was killer. It was one of the descending stairs, and it took everything in me to turn around and march my burning thighs up those steps. As soon as I got back to my car I inhaled my PB&J and protein shake. If that wasn't enough I drove to Franklin Canyon and hiked the Hastain Trail. Franklin Canyon is literally 15 minutes from my apt, and I can't believe I've never hiked it before. It's absolutely beautiful. It's so peaceful and quiet...it's like a hidden treasure in the Hollywood Hills.
This me almost near the top... don't I look exhausted?

day 121: fryman/wilacre park

I've hiked Runyon Canyon extensively, but have never looked into the other canyons in the Hollywood Hills. Today, I went for a hike in Coldwater Canyon Park/Wilacre Park/Fryman Canyon. I will have a lengthier post on another website that will detail the location, parking, trails, and an overall review, but for now this will be a short post. While this is not as challenging as Runyon Canyon, it is quiet and peaceful. If Runyon can be compared to a Hollywood Club (to see and be seen), Wilacre Park/Fryman Canyon is a nice hotel bar. The trails were not desolate; I encountered some runners. I opted not to run, because I didn't know the length of the trail. Next time I will run. It can be a quick hike or a lengthy small trail hike. It's versatile because of the parks adjacency to each other. There is a longer trail that I will do at some point, I only did part of that trail, because the map I had was not very detailed. Next time!
