I grew up with fresh fruits and vegetables as a kid, but living in an apartment hinders what you can grow. Luckily we have farmer's markets. Mine is on Sundays right down the street. The house I'm looking after this week has a small garden. This week I was able to enjoy some fresh tomatoes right off the vine: delicious.
